August Horoscopes

Below you’ll find horoscopes written as blessings, accompanied by questions for contemplation & creation for each Ecosystem and The Collective (what we share). You can view the cards these horoscopes were based on by viewing the August ‘Scopes highlights on my Instagram.

A bit about this month’s Horoscopes

If you’ve been reading these horoscopes regularly, then you know that they are (with the exception of The Collective) written for groupings of tarot birth cards I call Ecosystems.

[[Don’t know your Ecosystem? It’s easy to figure out using your birthdate. Follow these instructions to find out how.]]

These cards gift us with a language (an amalgam of ancient human myth and stories) to talk about who we are, what we need, etc. America's birth card is Hierophant (Ecosystem of Knowledge). I know that Hierophant isn’t a word we use in daily conversation, but in short: It represents the pope/priest archetype. In readings, The Hierophant can show up as a teacher, a keeper of wisdom, tradition, enforcer of doctrine, moral norms, etc.

I've written a couple pieces in recent weeks about how America's (not-so-secret) doctrine is white supremacy (Part I), and how the Hierophant years we encounter give us opportunities to see how we're grappling with that (Part II).

2019 is a Hierophant year. If I've done the math correctly, we won't have another for more than 80 years.

If you're paying any attention at all, you can probably see how America's doctrine of white supremacy is impacting us a collective right now. If it feels dire to you, that's because it's killing us. Mass shootings, keeping children in cages, the uptick of white nationalism and hate crimes inspired by the Emperor in the White House… Does anyone else feel like our ancestors are SCREAMING at us to finally get this right?

The violence of white supremacy has been rotting us from the inside for a very long time. All of us. Our current political landscape is the equivalent of a building giving way to a crumbling foundation. The very doctrine we were founded on is ready to swallow us whole.

This is THE task of our generation. We can't tackle any of the other big problems until we get this right because all global politics is impacted by the violence of white supremacy. Climate change, health care, women's rights, all of it.

Our gun policies are a direct result of this ethos. Access to weaponry enables enforcement through violence and terror and keeps the system in place through fear. At best, we stay quiet or ignorant. At worst we enable those in power out of the hope that the system will spare/elevate us. It won't.

Until white people stop kneeling to the altar of whiteness-- until we see the American dream as something other than its pursuit and preservation-- we will all continue to suffer.

On Saturday after I saw news about the first mass shooting of the weekend in El Paso, I turned to my cards to ask for what prayer the world needed from me. The blessing for The Collective was the result, and it inspired the creation of the rest.

As always: Take what you need, leave what you don’t.
